Project Team

Greg Freelon

Greg Freelon is an educator with national and international credits in teaching, theater, television/video, film, music and large-scale multi media event staging. Mr Freelon helped develop the model for Conflict Resolution Through Drama as a faculty member of New York University's Creative Arts Team. He went on to pioneer best practices Models in Youth Development, creating and facilitating interactive workshops delivered to youth groups and community organizations across the country.

Ty Collins

Mr. Collins is a retired English & Theatre educator and administrator with 35+ years of experience in higher education for the Business & Industry Division of Community College of Philadelphia. Twenty of those years were spent as a continuing education program coordinator for Cores States Bank, Philadelphia Gas Works, Housing and Urban Development, Temple University, and University of the Arts, teaching technical writing and public speaking. Damon Smith

Damon Smith is the founder of GlovesontheGround (GOTG) Damon has created a 'Conflict Garden' within Reed's Organic Farm in Egg Harbor Township in New Jersey. Damon also created the conceptual framework for 'Our Garden,' of which Coastal Cousins is a proud partrner.

Tony McGowan

Tony McGowan is an award-winning sound engineer who works exclusively for Lester Holt and NBC Nightly News. When he is not covering global events, Tony works in his Harlem Garden, where his prized Peach Tree reigns over the rest of his fruits and vegetables. Tony's Harlem Garden is a Coastal Cousins partner where we will be offering educational workshops and support.






Project Goals.

To develop and facilitate interactive workshops showcasing the adage, “Waste Nothing,” that helped enslaved peoples of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries to survive.

Community Engagement.

To offer selected schools, students, and community organizations the opportunity to expand the African Heritage Seed Exchange Project's overarching goals through a guided gardening process.

Educational Workshops

To create a 5-year, multi-community heritage gardening and history project designed for replication.

Educational Programs designed to...

create and facilitate a curriculum addressing the history of the slave trade economy, the journey of the seeds, and those who cultivated, grew, harvested, and stored seeds across multiple generations.

integrate the farming traditions transported to the Americas by each immigrant group to reach these shores. Coastal Cousins will also connect the lineage of Native American farming practices with those imported from abroad. The focus will be on regionally appropriate heritage seeds from around the world.

integrate site visits with hands-on workshops for program students and participants.
